Abstract
Secondary tumors of the lung, also known as metastatic lung tumors, arise from the spread of cancer cells originating from distant primary sites. This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the characteristics, diagnostic challenges, and treatment considerations associated with secondary tumors of the lung. The mechanisms of tumor dissemination and the factors influencing the formation of secondary lung tumors are reviewed. The chapter highlights the importance of the systemic circulation as a major route for metastasis, shedding light on the role of tumor cells’ ability to invade blood vessels and migrate to distant sites. Additionally, the impact of tumor microenvironment and molecular characteristics on metastatic potential is discussed.Radiological imaging techniques, such as computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET), are described, emphasizing their role in detecting and characterizing metastatic lesions. Additionally, we delve into the role of surgical interventions, such as metastasectomy and minimally invasive procedures. Lastly, the chapter sheds light on the prognosis and survivorship outcomes for patients with specific secondary lung tumors. It emphasizes the need for comprehensive multidisciplinary care, including supportive measures and close surveillance, to optimize patient outcomes and quality of life.
