Abstract

The true definition of a dilemma is the presence of two truths. It does not always mean a person must choose between the alternatives, but at times face the dilemma that he or she needs to accept both truths, although one may not be a desirable as the other. This very idea of accepting a desirable path along with a not so desirable path is faced by surgeons and their patients every day. As we look to offer patients treatment and potential cure of their disease, we also offer the unfortunate truth that along with the desired path of improving their condition they will certainly experience the pain that we inflict upon them.
