Abstract

The number of cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma diagnosed each year is increasing and is expected to peak around 2010. There is no current standard of care for the treatment of pleural mesothelioma. Only a few trials combining surgery with adjuvant therapies in selected patients have demonstrated any significant impact on the expected course of the disease. Newer diagnostic and treatment techniques are needed to improve survival in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. This article focuses on the use of photodynamic diagnosis and photodynamic therapy in the management of malignant pleural mesothelioma.
