Abstract
Six cases of occult carcinoma of the breast were detected by histologic examination of 244 consecutive grossly benign breast biopsies (2.4%). Half of the cancers were found in a routine random sample of 10 tissue blocks, while the others were detected only after the entire biopsy was examined. The detection of the additional cases appeared to be directly related to the amount of tissue examined microscopically. More complete histologic examination of breast biopsies appears to detect occult breast cancer.
