Distal ureteral stump syndrome in an adult female following childhood duplex system surgery

Distal Ureteral Stump Syndrome is a condition causing recurrent urinary tract infections due to a retained ureteral stump post-ureterectomy. We present a 54-year-old female with recurrent urinary tract infections in adulthood following a childhood surgery for a duplex renal collecting system. Cystoscopy revealed mucus and debris within the retained ureteral stump, suspected to be the source of recurrent infections. Stump excision and non-refluxing reimplantation, due to proximity to the functional ureter, resulted in resolution of recurrent infections. This case highlights the need consider adult DUSS as an actionable cause of UTIs in select patients.
