Abstract
A 44.3 kb and a 40.7 kb plasmid from Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus St76 and MR27a, respectively, cause complete inhibition of adsorption for 3 bacteriophages. Chemical treatments of whole cells of wild type strains and their bacteriophage resistance plasmid cured mutants showed that plasmid encoded proteinaceous material prevented bacteriophage adsorption via blocking bacteriophage receptor sites on wild type strains. Main component of bacteriophage receptor sites on cell surface of both strains was galactose.
